So I lied, this post isn't about Afghanistan... but it is about history and politics and religion. In a way, learning to understand the unrest caused by the Westboro Baptist Church can help understand the conflict in Afghanistan. They are even more closely related than you might think, but I'll get to that in a moment. The documentary by Louis Theroux (BBC) follows the members of this infamous church (comprised of mostly one family, hence the title) who preach the word of God. Or so they say. According to them, the word of god consists of hating everything, including but most certainly not limited to gays, Jews, Barack Obama, the US Military, America and the world in general, Muslims, and every other religion including all other Christian denominations.
Stay tuned for more about the Westboro Baptist church. I will attempt to break it down as well as compare and contrast to religious fanaticism elsewhere by approaching it from 5 ways: Demography, Geography, Politics, Economics, and Culture.
